Standing still

Case Scenario: I have a 1 sqm area of cream patch to sew, how long does that take? 1 hour? So, I cut up my pieces and I start. 5 hours later I have 2sqm. Why?

When I was studying, I would receive a brief from the university… first I would have to decipher it, look up words, terminology, summarise, conceptualise, look up references, look for precedents, refer back to brief, try brainstorm. Then I would start to research, make notes, look for precedents, www., Instagram, Pinterest, magazines maybe, books.

I would say a minimum of 8 hours before I picked up a pen. I would think it’s just because I am an older student, perhaps I’m way slower, but what I have realised is that what is most personal is every artist, researchers, new project starters challenge. In order to get going you need to do the foot work, sometimes it can be ideas, or false starts or dead ends. This is all normal. Projects take a lot of research, thought, and processing time. I need to accept it and enjoy the journey not only the end game.
